Hummus Day is an annual event celebrated on the third Thursday in May. The holiday started in 2012. The holiday was started by Ben Lang, Miriam Young and a team at a hackathon in Tel Aviv and has been marked by hundreds of thousands of people each year since its inception. The event celebrates hummus a Middle Eastern dip/spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. People are encouraged to eat hummus for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the day itself. Each year the holiday has gone viral around the world. Hundreds of thousands shared it on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. Many of them take photos of themselves eating hummus and post it on social networks. A crowdsourced map was created in honor of the event to show hummus places around the world.
